How it is calculated

Your rupees buy coins at today’s price; their value moves with the price, and India taxes the gain when you sell.

  • Coins bought = amount invested × (1 − buy fee) ÷ price now
  • Sale value = coins bought × target price
  • Money from the sale = sale value × (1 − sell fee)
  • Profit before tax = money from the sale − amount invested
  • Tax = tax rate × (sale value − amount invested), on a gain only; fees are not deducted
  • TDS = 1% of the sale value, deducted when you sell and counted toward the tax
  • Market cap at the target = target price × coins in circulation

Frequently asked questions

Short answers on investing in altcoins from India and what this calculator counts.

Any cryptocurrency other than Bitcoin, such as Solana, XRP, Cardano or Dogecoin. Many are far more volatile than Bitcoin: a coin can rise several times over in a year or lose most of its value, and some disappear altogether. This calculator shows what an amount in rupees buys and what it could be worth at a price you choose, so you can see both sides before you invest.

Your rupees, less the fee to buy, are divided by today’s price to get the coins. With ₹1,00,000 at ₹12,000 a coin and a 0.1% fee you get 8.325 coins. At ₹30,000 they are worth ₹2,49,750, and after a 0.1% sell fee you receive ₹2,49,500.25, a profit of ₹1,49,500.25 before tax.

Check the market cap it implies: the target price times the coins in circulation, which coin tracking sites list for each coin. If a coin has 50 crore coins in circulation, ₹30,000 a coin means the whole coin is worth ₹15 lakh crore. Compare that with the largest coins today. A target that needs a coin to become bigger than Bitcoin is unlikely.

The same as any crypto: a gain on selling is taxed at a flat 30%, plus 4% cess and surcharge where it applies, with only the cost of buying deducted. A loss on one coin cannot be set off against a gain on another, so a winner and a loser in the same year do not cancel out. 1% TDS is deducted from the sale value and counts toward the tax. For the full tax on a sale, use the India Crypto Tax Calculator.

Coins such as Shiba Inu cost a tiny fraction of a rupee, so ₹1,00,000 buys crores of them. What matters is not the number of coins but the price you pay and the price you sell at. Prices below one rupee are shown here with enough digits to read, such as ₹0.0012.

From CoinGecko, only when you press Get Live Price, and only for the coin you picked; your amount is never sent. For another coin, type its price. For Bitcoin and Ether, use the Bitcoin Investment Calculator and the Ethereum Investment Calculator.
