Tax is worked out the way India taxes crypto, on the sell price minus the buy price, with no deduction for fees. TDS is left out because you claim it back. To see the profit at any sell price, use the Crypto Profit Calculator.

How it is calculated

You break even when the money you keep from the sale equals everything the holding cost you.

  • Total cost = buy price × quantity, plus the buy fee and any other costs
  • Break-even before tax = total cost ÷ quantity ÷ (1 − sell fee)
  • Tax on a sale = tax rate × (sell price − buy price) × quantity. Fees are not deducted, and there is no tax if the price has not risen
  • Break-even sell price = (total cost ÷ quantity − tax rate × buy price) ÷ (1 − sell fee − tax rate)
  • If you sold now = current price × quantity, minus the sell fee, the tax and the total cost
  • Price for your target = the same sum as the break-even price, with your target profit added to the total cost

Frequently asked questions

Short answers on break-even prices and on how fees and tax move them.

It is the sell price at which you get back exactly what the holding cost you, with no profit and no loss. Without fees or tax it is simply your buy price. Fees on the way in and on the way out push it higher.

Start with the total cost: the buy value plus the buy fee and any other costs. Take 0.5 BTC bought at ₹25,00,000 with a 0.5% fee. The cost is ₹12,50,000 plus ₹6,250, which is ₹12,56,250. With a 0.5% fee on the sale as well, you need to sell at ₹25,25,125.63 per BTC to get that back before tax, 1.01% above your buy price.

India taxes the rise in price at 30% and does not let you deduct fees. So if you sell at the before-tax break-even, the price has still risen a little, and that rise is taxed even though you made no real profit. In the example above the break-even after 30% tax is ₹25,35,971.22, which is 1.44% above your buy price. The tax at that price is ₹5,395.68.

No. The 1% TDS taken from the sale value is an advance payment of your income tax, and you claim it back as a credit when you file. It lowers the cash you receive on the day, but it is not a cost. Use the Crypto TDS Calculator to see the amount.

Both are optional. With a current price, the calculator shows what you would make or lose by selling now, after fees and tax, and how far the price is from break-even. With a target profit, it shows the sell price that leaves you that percentage of your total cost after fees and tax. A 20% target in the example above needs ₹32,58,992.81 per BTC.

Enter the percentage you actually pay on each side of the trade, including any GST your exchange adds to its fee. Put fixed charges, such as a network or withdrawal fee, under other costs. To see the profit at any sell price, use the Crypto Profit Calculator.
