US crypto tax rules

The IRS treats crypto as property, so selling it, swapping it for another coin or spending it counts as a sale.

Capital gains tax

0% to 37% federal

  • Short-term gains are taxed as ordinary income. Crypto held for one year or less is taxed at your normal federal rate, from 10% to 37%.
  • Long-term gains get lower rates. Crypto held for more than one year is taxed at 0%, 15% or 20%, depending on your taxable income and filing status.
  • High earners pay 3.8% more. The Net Investment Income Tax applies when modified adjusted gross income is above $200,000 for single filers or $250,000 for joint filers.
  • State tax is separate. Most states tax capital gains as income. Some, such as Texas and Florida, have no income tax.

Losses and reporting

Form 8949 and Schedule D

  • Losses offset gains. Capital losses reduce your capital gains first, then up to $3,000 of other income a year, or $1,500 if married filing separately. Unused losses carry forward.
  • The wash sale rule does not currently cover crypto. You can sell at a loss and buy back without the 30-day wait that applies to stocks. Changes have been proposed, so check the current position.
  • Every sale goes on your return. List each sale on Form 8949 and total them on Schedule D. Form 1040 also asks whether you had digital asset transactions.
  • Exchanges report to the IRS. Brokers issue Form 1099-DA showing sale proceeds for sales from 2025, and cost basis for certain sales from 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Short answers on crypto tax in the United States and on how this calculator gets its numbers.

The IRS treats crypto as property. Selling it, swapping it for another coin or spending it is a sale, and the difference between what you received and what you paid is a capital gain or loss. Crypto you earn, such as staking or mining rewards, is ordinary income at its value on the day you receive it.

It depends on how long you held the crypto before selling. One year or less is short-term, and the gain is taxed at your ordinary federal rate, from 10% to 37%. More than one year is long-term, and the gain is taxed at 0%, 15% or 20%.

It depends on your holding period, taxable income and filing status. Take a single filer with $85,000 of other taxable income who sells 0.5 BTC bought at $60,000 for $95,000, a gain of $17,500. Held for more than a year, the federal tax is 15%, or $2,625. Held for a year or less, it is 22%, or $3,850.

No tax is due on that sale. A capital loss first reduces your other capital gains for the year. If losses are larger than gains, up to $3,000 of the excess can reduce other income, and the rest carries forward to later years.

Not at present. The rule stops stock investors claiming a loss when they buy the same security back within 30 days, and it does not currently cover crypto. Proposals to extend it to digital assets have been made, so check the current position before relying on it.

It is an extra 3.8% federal tax on investment income, including crypto gains, for higher earners. It applies to the smaller of your net investment income or the amount by which your modified adjusted gross income is above $200,000 for single filers and heads of household, $250,000 for joint filers and $125,000 for married filing separately. This calculator adds it, using your taxable income as an estimate of that figure.

In most states, yes. States generally tax capital gains as ordinary income at their own rates, and some states have no income tax. Enter your state rate in the calculator to include it.

Each sale is listed on Form 8949 and the totals go on Schedule D of Form 1040. Form 1040 also asks whether you received or disposed of digital assets during the year. Exchanges send Form 1099-DA to you and the IRS showing your sales.

Yes. Trading one coin for another is treated as selling the first coin at its market value at that moment, so you have a gain or loss on it even though you received no dollars.

It multiplies your buy and sell prices by the quantity to get the gain. It then places that gain on top of your other taxable income and applies the 2026 federal brackets for your filing status, using ordinary rates for short-term gains and the 0%, 15% and 20% rates for long-term gains. It adds the 3.8% Net Investment Income Tax where it applies and your state tax at the rate you enter. On a loss, tax is $0. Everything runs in your browser and nothing you type is sent to a server.
