France crypto tax rules

For occasional investors, France taxes the gain when crypto is turned into euros or spent. Moving from one crypto to another is not taxed.

Occasional investors

31.4% flat tax

  • The flat tax is 31.4% from 2026. It is 12.8% income tax plus 18.6% social levies, on gains from sales made on or after 1 January 2026. Before that it was 30%.
  • Crypto-to-crypto swaps are not taxed. Tax arises only when you sell for euros or another official currency, or pay for goods or services. Swapping into a stablecoin is not a sale.
  • Sales of €305 or less are exempt. The limit is on the total you sold for in the calendar year, across all your crypto. It is not a limit on the gain.
  • You can opt for the progressive scale. Your income tax band then replaces the 12.8%. It helps if your band is 0% or 11%, and the choice covers all your investment income for the year.

Working it out and reporting

Form 2086

  • The gain uses your whole portfolio. Gain = sale price − total acquisition cost × (sale price ÷ total value of your crypto portfolio at the time of the sale).
  • Losses stay in the year. A loss can be set against crypto gains of the same year only. It cannot be carried forward.
  • Each sale is reported. Sales go on form 2086 with your income tax return. Accounts held with exchanges abroad are declared on form 3916-bis, and an undeclared account can be fined €750.
  • Habitual trading is taxed differently. People who trade habitually, and miners, are taxed on their profit as non-commercial income at the progressive scale.

Frequently asked questions

Short answers on crypto tax in France and on how this calculator gets its numbers.

For occasional investors, the gain is taxed when you sell crypto for euros or use it to pay for something. The standard charge is a flat tax of 31.4% in 2026: 12.8% income tax and 18.6% social levies. Swapping one crypto for another is not taxed.

With the flat tax, 31.4% of the gain. Take someone who sells 0.5 BTC bought at €60,000 per BTC for €90,000 per BTC, a gain of €15,000. Income tax is €1,920 and social levies are €2,790, so the total is €4,710 and they keep €40,290.

Yes. Social levies on most investment income, including crypto gains, rose from 17.2% to 18.6% for sales made on or after 1 January 2026. That lifted the flat tax from 30% to 31.4%. The income tax part stayed at 12.8%.

No. An exchange between crypto assets, including into a stablecoin, is not a taxable event for an occasional investor. The gain is taxed later, when you convert to euros or another official currency, or spend the crypto.

If everything you sold for euros during the calendar year adds up to €305 or less, your gains are exempt. The limit is on sale proceeds, not on the gain, and it covers all your crypto together. Above €305, the whole gain is taxed.

It can help if your income tax band is 0% or 11%, because that rate replaces the 12.8%. Social levies of 18.6% apply either way. The option covers all your investment income for the year, not only crypto, so check the effect on dividends and interest too. This calculator applies one band to the whole gain, which is a simplification.

France uses a portfolio method. The gain on a sale is the sale price minus a share of what you paid for all your crypto: total acquisition cost × (sale price ÷ total value of your portfolio at the time). If you hold one coin bought at one price, that gives the same answer as sell value minus buy value, which is what this calculator works out.

A loss on a sale can be set against gains on your other crypto sales in the same year. If you end the year with a net loss, it is lost: it cannot be carried forward or used against other income.

Yes. Each account you hold with a crypto platform based outside France is declared on form 3916-bis with your tax return, even if you made no sales. The fine for an undeclared account is €750, or €1,500 if it held more than €50,000.

It multiplies your buy and sell prices by the quantity and subtracts fees to get the gain. It charges income tax at 12.8%, or at the scale band you choose, and adds 18.6% social levies. If this sale and your other sales for the year total €305 or less, the tax is €0. On a loss, tax is €0. Everything runs in your browser and nothing you type is sent to a server.
