An average is useful for tracking a position. For tax, the cost of the units you sold may be worked out another way, such as first in, first out, so check before you file.

How it is calculated

A weighted average: bigger buys count for more.

  • Total quantity = all quantities added together
  • Total invested = price × quantity for each buy, added together
  • Average buy price = total invested ÷ total quantity
  • Price range = the lowest and highest price you entered

Frequently asked questions

Short answers on averaging the cost of several buys.

Add up what you paid for every buy, which is price multiplied by quantity each time, and divide by the total quantity you bought. Buying 0.5 at ₹20,00,000, 0.25 at ₹30,00,000 and 0.25 at ₹25,00,000 costs ₹23,75,000 for 1 unit, so the average buy price is ₹23,75,000.

A plain average of the prices ignores how much you bought at each one. In the example above the three prices average ₹25,00,000, but half of the holding was bought at the lowest price, so the true average cost is ₹23,75,000.

This calculator uses the prices you enter. To count fees, enter a price per unit that already includes the fee for that buy.

Indian tax rules do not clearly set out one cost method for crypto. First in, first out is commonly used, which can give a different cost from an average. Check with a tax professional before you file.
