Short answers on how a crypto sale is taxed in Dubai.
For an individual investing their own money, yes. There is no personal income tax and no capital gains tax for individuals. Take someone who sells 0.5 BTC bought at $60,000 per BTC for $100,000 per BTC. The profit is $20,000, or AED 73,450, the tax is AED 0 and they keep the full AED 183,625. A business is different and can owe Corporate Tax on its crypto profit.
No. Tax on income and profit is federal, so it is the same in every emirate. What is specific to Dubai is regulation. The Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority, VARA, licenses and supervises crypto businesses on the Dubai mainland and in its free zones, apart from the DIFC. VARA is a regulator and does not collect tax.
The UAE does not tax an individual's personal crypto gains, wherever they live. Your home country may, though. Most countries tax their residents on gains made anywhere, and a few tax their citizens wherever they live. Moving to Dubai does not by itself end tax residence somewhere else. You generally count as a UAE tax resident after 183 days in the country in a 12-month period, or 90 days if you hold a residence permit and have a home or a job there.
9% Corporate Tax on taxable income above AED 375,000. Take a company with AED 400,000 of other taxable income that sells 0.5 BTC bought at $60,000 per BTC for $100,000 per BTC. The profit of AED 73,450 all falls above the threshold, so the tax is AED 6,610.50 and the company keeps AED 177,014.50.
Not automatically. A Qualifying Free Zone Person pays 0% Corporate Tax on qualifying income and 9% on other taxable income. Whether crypto profit is qualifying income depends on the activity and on meeting the free zone conditions, so check before relying on it. This calculator does not apply the free zone rate.
Crypto is mostly priced in dollars, and the dirham has been fixed at AED 3.6725 to the dollar since 1997. The calculator converts at that rate. Your bank or exchange may use a slightly different rate when you cash out.
No. Transferring ownership of virtual assets and converting them are exempt from VAT in the UAE. Fees for services around crypto, such as custody and advice, can carry VAT.
It converts dollar prices to dirhams, multiplies the buy and sell prices by the quantity and subtracts fees to get the profit. For an individual investor the tax is AED 0. For a business it places the profit on top of the other taxable income you enter and charges 9% on the part above AED 375,000, or AED 0 if you elect Small Business Relief.
