TDS is tax paid in advance, not an extra tax. It is recorded against your PAN and you claim it as credit against your tax when you file your return.
TDS is a share of the sale value, not of your profit.
Short answers on the 1% TDS taken from crypto sales in India.
TDS stands for tax deducted at source. When you sell or transfer a crypto asset in India, the buyer or the exchange deducts 1% of the sale value and deposits it with the government against your PAN. The rule came in as Section 194S and continues from 1 April 2026 under Section 393(1) of the Income-tax Act, 2025.
On an Indian exchange, the exchange usually deducts it for you. In a direct deal between two people, the buyer is responsible for deducting it and depositing it.
TDS is not an extra tax. It is credited against the tax you owe for the year. If the TDS deducted is more than your total tax, the excess is refunded after you file your return.
Section 194S set yearly limits of ₹50,000 where the buyer is an individual or HUF that meets certain conditions, and ₹10,000 in other cases. Published guidance is not consistent on whether these limits continue for sales from 1 April 2026, so confirm with your exchange or a tax professional.
A higher rate applies, usually 20%, if the seller has not given a PAN. Change the TDS rate field in the calculator to see the effect.
