How it is calculated

The return is measured against everything you put in, fees included, over the exact days you held.

  • Put in = amount invested + fees
  • Profit or loss = value now − put in
  • Total return = profit or loss ÷ put in
  • Years held = days between the two dates ÷ 365.25
  • Annualised return = (value now ÷ put in) raised to the power of 1 ÷ years held, minus 1
  • After inflation, a year = (1 + annualised return) ÷ (1 + inflation) − 1
  • The other investment = put in × (1 + its yearly rate) raised to the power of years held

Frequently asked questions

Short answers on measuring the return on a crypto investment.

It shows how a crypto investment has done between two dates. You enter what you put in, any fees, what it is worth now or what you sold it for, and when you started. You get the profit, the total return, the return per year, what that is worth after inflation, and how it compares with another investment such as a fixed deposit at a rate you choose.

Total return is the whole gain over the time you held. Annualised return is the steady yearly rate that would give the same result, which makes investments held for different lengths of time comparable. Say you put in ₹1,01,000 including ₹1,000 of fees on 1 January 2022 and it is worth ₹2,00,000 on 1 January 2026. The total return is 98.02%, but spread over four years it is 18.63% a year, because each year builds on the one before.

Because rising prices eat into what your money can buy. With inflation at 5% a year, the 18.63% a year in the example is about 12.98% a year in real terms, and the ₹2,00,000 is worth about ₹1,64,540 in rupees of the day you started. Use the inflation rate you think fits the period; the figure here is only an example.

With what you would otherwise have done with the money, such as a fixed deposit, an index fund or gold. Enter that investment’s yearly rate and the calculator shows what the same ₹1,01,000 would be worth over the same days. At 7% a year it would be ₹1,32,390.40, so the crypto came out ₹67,609.60 ahead. Rates change, so use the one that applied to you.

Fees are added to what you put in, so they lower both returns. For a holding of less than a year the annualised figure can swing a long way, because a small gain over a few weeks becomes a large yearly rate; treat it with care. For a plan with monthly investments, use the Crypto DCA Calculator.

Profit from selling crypto is taxed at a flat 30%, or 31.2% with cess, and fees cannot be deducted. 1% TDS is also deducted from the sale value. This calculator shows returns before tax; for the return after tax, use the Crypto ROI Calculator, and for the tax on a sale, the India Crypto Tax Calculator.
