How it is calculated

Your rupees buy a share of one Ether (ETH), Ethereum’s coin; its value moves with the price, and India taxes the gain when you sell.

  • Ether bought = amount invested × (1 − buy fee) ÷ Ether price now
  • Gwei = Ether bought × 1,00,00,00,000 (one billion gwei make one Ether)
  • Sale value = Ether bought × target price
  • Money from the sale = sale value × (1 − sell fee)
  • Profit before tax = money from the sale − amount invested
  • Tax = tax rate × (sale value − amount invested), on a gain only; fees are not deducted
  • TDS = 1% of the sale value, deducted when you sell and counted toward the tax
  • Profit after tax = profit before tax − tax

Frequently asked questions

Short answers on investing in Ethereum from India and what this calculator counts.

It shows what an amount in rupees buys in Ether, the coin of the Ethereum network, and what it could be worth at a price you choose. You enter how much you invest, the Ether price now and a target price, and you get the Ether and gwei you would own, the value at the target, the profit before and after tax and a table of results at other prices. You can fetch the live price or type your own.

Yes. Ether divides into tiny units: one Ether is a billion gwei, the unit used to quote network fees. With ₹1,00,000 at a price of ₹2,50,000 and a 0.1% fee, you get 0.3996 ETH, which is 39,96,00,000 gwei.

The Ether you hold is multiplied by the target price, less the fee to sell. In the example, if Ether rises to ₹4,00,000, the 0.3996 ETH is worth ₹1,59,840. After a 0.1% sell fee you receive ₹1,59,680.16, a profit of ₹59,680.16 on your ₹1,00,000.

A gain on selling Ether is taxed at a flat 30%, plus 4% cess, which makes 31.2%, and surcharge for high incomes. Only the cost of buying is deducted, so fees do not lower the tax, and a loss cannot be set off against any other income or gain. In the example the tax at 30% is ₹17,952 on a gain of ₹59,840, leaving ₹41,728.16. 1% TDS, ₹1,598.40 here, is deducted when you sell and counts toward that tax. No. Staking rewards add Ether over time, but how they are taxed in India is not settled, so they are left out; ask a tax professional before you count on them. Moving Ether out of an exchange also costs a network fee paid in gwei, which you can estimate with the Crypto Gas Fee Calculator.

From CoinGecko, only when you press Get Live Price. Only the coin is sent, never your amount. Prices on Indian exchanges can be a little higher or lower than the global price. For Bitcoin, use the Bitcoin Investment Calculator.
