How it is calculated

A percentage gain is the change in price measured against the price you bought at.

  • Percentage gain = (price now − buy price) ÷ buy price × 100. A negative answer is a loss
  • Price for a gain = buy price × (1 + gain ÷ 100)
  • Price change = price now − buy price, for one coin
  • Multiple = price now ÷ buy price
  • Value now = amount invested ÷ buy price × price now
  • Gain in rupees = value now − amount invested

Frequently asked questions

Short answers on percentage gains and on what this calculator counts.

Subtract the buy price from the price now, divide by the buy price and multiply by 100. If you bought at ₹25,00,000 and the price is now ₹32,00,000, the gain is ₹7,00,000 ÷ ₹25,00,000 × 100 = 28%. If the price now is lower than the buy price, the answer is negative, which is a loss.

Multiply the buy price by 1 plus the gain. For a 50% gain on a coin bought at ₹25,00,000, that is ₹25,00,000 × 1.5 = ₹37,50,000. Choose “The price for a gain” in the calculator to work this out.

No. The percentage is the same whatever you put in, while the profit depends on the amount. A 28% gain is ₹28,000 on ₹1,00,000 and ₹2,80,000 on ₹10,00,000. Fees and tax then reduce what you keep, and this calculator does not count them. The Crypto Profit Calculator includes fees.

Because each percentage is worked out on a different starting figure. A coin that falls from ₹100 to ₹50 has lost 50%. To get back to ₹100 it has to rise by ₹50, and ₹50 is 100% of the ₹50 it now stands at. The Crypto Loss Calculator shows the gain needed to recover from any loss.

A percentage gain compares two prices. ROI compares what you got back with everything you paid, fees included, and is often given per year so that holdings of different lengths can be compared. Use the Crypto ROI Calculator for that.

Not while you hold. When you sell, the profit is taxed at 30%, or 31.2% with cess, and a loss cannot be set off against other gains. Use the India Crypto Tax Calculator for the tax on a sale.
