Your rupees buy a share of one Bitcoin; its value moves with the price, and India taxes the gain when you sell.
Short answers on investing in Bitcoin from India and what this calculator counts.
It shows what an amount in rupees buys in Bitcoin and what it could be worth at a price you choose. You enter how much you invest, the Bitcoin price now and a target price, and you get the Bitcoin and satoshis you would own, the value at the target, the profit before and after tax and a table of results at other prices. You can fetch the live price or type your own.
Yes. A Bitcoin divides into 100 million satoshis, and exchanges in India let you buy small amounts. With ₹1,00,000 at a price of ₹50,00,000 and a 0.1% fee, you get 0.01998 BTC, which is 19,98,000 satoshis.
The Bitcoin you hold is multiplied by the target price, less the fee to sell. In the example, if Bitcoin doubles to ₹1,00,00,000, the 0.01998 BTC is worth ₹1,99,800. After a 0.1% sell fee you receive ₹1,99,600.20, a profit of ₹99,600.20 on your ₹1,00,000.
A gain on selling Bitcoin is taxed at a flat 30%, plus 4% cess, which makes 31.2%, and surcharge for high incomes. Only the cost of buying is deducted, so fees do not lower the tax, and a loss cannot be set off against any other income or gain. In the example the tax at 30% is ₹29,940 on a gain of ₹99,800, leaving ₹69,660.20. For the full tax on a sale, use the India Crypto Tax Calculator.
No. 1% of the sale value, ₹1,998 in the example, is deducted when you sell, but it counts toward the tax you owe when you file your return, and you can claim it back if you have no tax to pay. It does reduce the cash you receive on the day of the sale. For more, use the Crypto TDS Calculator.
