How it is calculated

A trade makes or loses money on the coins it holds, less a fee on each side.

  • Coins in the trade = trade size ÷ entry price
  • Gross profit or loss = coins × (exit price − entry price) for a long, and the other way round for a short
  • Fees = trade size × entry fee, plus coins × exit price × exit fee
  • Net profit or loss = gross profit or loss − fees
  • Return on the trade = net profit or loss ÷ trade size
  • Break-even exit price = entry price × (1 + entry fee) ÷ (1 − exit fee) for a long, and entry price × (1 − entry fee) ÷ (1 + exit fee) for a short

Frequently asked questions

Short answers on trade profit, fees and what this calculator counts.

It shows what one crypto trade makes or loses once you are out of it. You enter how much you trade, the entry and exit prices and the fee on each side. You get the coins in the trade, the profit or loss before and after fees, the return on the amount you traded and the exit price you need to break even.

Divide the trade size by the entry price to get the coins, then multiply the coins by the move in price. Take a long of ₹1,00,000 in Bitcoin at ₹25,00,000. That buys 0.04 BTC. Sold at ₹26,00,000, the 0.04 BTC is worth ₹1,04,000, so the trade makes ₹4,000 before fees.

You pay a fee when you get in and again when you get out, each on the value traded at that moment. In the example above a 0.1% fee on each side costs ₹100 to buy and ₹104 to sell, ₹204 in all, which leaves a net profit of ₹3,796, a 3.8% return on ₹1,00,000. The exit price has to reach ₹25,05,005.01, 0.2% above the entry, before the trade makes anything.

A short sells first and buys back later, so it makes money when the price falls. A short of ₹1,00,000 at ₹25,00,000 covered at ₹24,00,000 makes ₹4,000 before fees. On most exchanges in India a short is opened through futures or margin, which can add interest, funding and the risk of liquidation. For those, use the Crypto Futures P&L Calculator.

Profit from selling crypto is taxed at a flat 30%, or 31.2% with cess. Only the cost of buying can be deducted, so trading fees do not lower the tax, and a loss cannot be set off against other income. 1% TDS is also deducted from the sale value. This calculator shows figures before tax; use the India Crypto Tax Calculator for the tax on a trade.

The Crypto Profit Calculator starts from the quantity you bought and fees in rupees. This one starts from the amount you trade, takes fees in percent the way exchanges quote them, works for shorts as well as longs, and shows the break-even exit price and the result at other exit prices.
