Short answers on measuring the return on a crypto investment.
Return on investment is your profit as a percentage of what the investment cost you. It lets you compare investments of different sizes: a ₹50,000 profit is a 50% return on ₹1,00,000 but only a 5% return on ₹10,00,000.
Divide your net profit by your total cost. If you invested ₹10,00,000, paid ₹5,000 in fees and the holding is now worth ₹15,00,000, your total cost is ₹10,05,000 and your profit is ₹4,95,000. The ROI is 49.25%.
It is the steady yearly return that would have produced the same result over the time you held. It makes investments held for different lengths of time comparable. A 50% return over two years is 22.47% a year, not 25%, because each year builds on the one before.
Crypto profit is taxed at a flat 30%, or 31.2% with the 4% cess, and fees cannot be deducted. In the example above the tax is 30% of ₹5,00,000, which is ₹1,50,000. That leaves ₹3,45,000, so the ROI after tax is 34.33% instead of 49.25%.
Yes. Fees are part of what the investment cost you, so the calculator adds them to your total cost before working out the return. They do not reduce your tax, though, because India does not allow fees as a deduction against crypto profit.
No. TDS is taken from the sale value when you sell, but it is an advance payment of your income tax, not an extra charge. You claim it as a credit when you file your return, so it does not lower your ROI. Use the Crypto TDS Calculator to see the amount.
