How it is calculated

Losses come off your gains first, then the discount is applied to what is left.

  • Gain or loss on a disposal = proceeds − cost base
  • Capital losses = this year's losses and any carried forward from earlier years are subtracted from your gains. They are used first against gains on crypto held for less than 12 months, which gives the lowest tax
  • CGT discount = 50% of the gains that are left on crypto held for 12 months or more
  • Net capital gain = gains − losses − CGT discount
  • Income tax = the net capital gain taxed on top of your other taxable income at 2026–27 resident rates, after the low income tax offset
  • Medicare levy = 2% of the net capital gain, reduced for low incomes
  • Net capital loss = losses that are larger than your gains carry forward to later years

Frequently asked questions

Short answers on working out a year of crypto capital gains for an Australian tax return.

Work out the gain or loss on each disposal, which is the proceeds minus the cost base. Subtract your capital losses from your capital gains, then apply the 50% CGT discount to any remaining gains on crypto you held for 12 months or more. The result is your net capital gain, which is added to your taxable income.

That is the order the ATO sets. Losses reduce your gains at their full amount first, and only what is left of an eligible gain is halved. Take a $20,000 gain on crypto held for two years and a $6,000 loss. The loss leaves $14,000, and the discount halves that to a net capital gain of $7,000.

You can choose, and the ATO says the best result comes from using losses first against gains that do not qualify for the discount. A loss used against a gain held under 12 months saves tax on the full amount, while one used against a discounted gain saves tax on only half. The calculator applies losses in that order.

If your capital losses were larger than your capital gains in an earlier year, the difference became a net capital loss that carries forward. Enter the unused balance and the calculator subtracts it from this year's gains. A capital loss cannot be deducted from other income such as wages.

Proceeds is what you received for the crypto. For a swap, that is the market value in Australian dollars of the crypto you received. Cost base is what you paid to acquire the crypto, plus costs of buying and selling it such as exchange fees.

Yes. From 1 July 2027 the 50% discount is replaced by cost base indexation and a 30% minimum tax on capital gains, for gains that build up after that date. This calculator covers the 2026–27 income year, when the 50% discount still applies.
