Whether you are investing or running a business is the question that matters. It depends on your own facts, such as whether the activity needs a licence. If you are unsure, check with the Federal Tax Authority or a UAE tax adviser.
Short answers on crypto tax in the UAE and on how this calculator gets its numbers.
For most individuals, no. The UAE has no personal income tax and no capital gains tax for individuals, so profit on crypto you hold as a personal investment is not taxed. Businesses are different: a company's crypto profit is part of its taxable income for Corporate Tax.
No, not on personal investment. The rules are federal, so they are the same in every emirate. Take someone who sells 0.5 BTC bought at AED 300,000 per BTC for AED 400,000 per BTC and pays AED 500 in fees. The profit is AED 49,500, the tax is AED 0 and they keep AED 199,500.
When the crypto profit belongs to a business. That covers companies, and individuals who carry on a business whose turnover goes above AED 1 million in a calendar year. Wages and personal investment income do not count towards that AED 1 million.
9% of its taxable income above AED 375,000. Take a company with AED 300,000 of other taxable income that sells 0.5 BTC bought at AED 300,000 per BTC for AED 650,000 per BTC. The profit is AED 175,000, which takes taxable income to AED 475,000. The AED 100,000 above the threshold is taxed at 9%, so the tax is AED 9,000.
Investing for your own account in a way that does not need a trade licence in the UAE. Buying and holding crypto with your own money normally fits. Trading as a licensed activity, or trading for other people, can be a business instead. The line depends on your facts, so check if you are unsure.
A resident business with revenue of AED 3 million or less in a tax period can elect to be treated as having no taxable income, so it pays no Corporate Tax for that period. The relief is available for tax periods ending on or before 31 December 2029. Qualifying Free Zone Persons and members of large multinational groups cannot use it.
Not on the crypto itself. Transferring ownership of virtual assets and converting them are exempt from VAT, and the exemption applies back to 1 January 2018. Services around crypto, such as custody and advice, are still subject to VAT at 5%.
An individual pays no personal income tax on them. For a business, mining and staking income is part of taxable income for Corporate Tax. Mining for other people for a fee can also be subject to VAT, while mining on your own account generally is not.
A Qualifying Free Zone Person pays 0% Corporate Tax on qualifying income and 9% on other taxable income. Whether crypto profit is qualifying income depends on the activity and on meeting the free zone conditions. This calculator does not apply the free zone rate.
It multiplies your buy and sell prices by the quantity and subtracts fees to get the profit. For an individual investor the tax is AED 0. For a business it places the profit on top of the other taxable income you enter and charges 9% on the part above AED 375,000, or AED 0 if you elect Small Business Relief. On a loss, tax is AED 0.
