How it is calculated

The exchange charges a percentage of the trade, and GST is added to that charge.

  • Trading fee = trade value × fee rate
  • GST on fee = trading fee × 18%. GST is charged on the fee, not on the trade
  • Total fee = trading fee + GST, once for a buy or a sell and twice for a buy and sell
  • TDS on a sale = 1% of the sale value after the fee and GST are taken off
  • You receive = sale value − total fee − TDS
  • Rise to cover a buy and sell = 2 × fee with GST ÷ (1 − fee with GST)

Frequently asked questions

Short answers on what a spot trade costs in India and on what this calculator counts.

The exchange charges a trading fee, which is a percentage of the trade, and adds GST to that fee. On a trade of ₹1,00,000 with a 0.1% fee, the fee is ₹100 and GST at 18% adds ₹18, so the trade costs ₹118. That is an effective rate of 0.118%.

No. GST at 18% applies to the fee the exchange charges for its service, not to the value of the crypto you buy or sell. In the example above it is 18% of ₹100, not 18% of ₹1,00,000.

On a sale, 1% TDS is withheld under Section 194S once your sales in a financial year pass ₹50,000, or ₹10,000 for some sellers. It is worked out on the sale value after the exchange's fee and GST are taken off, so in the example above it is ₹998.82 and you receive ₹98,883.18. It is an advance payment of your income tax, which you claim back as a credit, so it is not a cost. Use the Crypto TDS Calculator for more on it.

A maker order adds to the order book and waits, such as a limit order that is not matched straight away. A taker order is matched against one already there, such as a market order. Many exchanges charge makers less than takers, and lower both rates as your trading volume grows. Enter the rate that applies to your order.

Small fees add up when you trade often. Enter the number of trades you make in a month to see the monthly and yearly cost. Twenty trades a month like the one above cost ₹2,360 a month, which is ₹28,320 a year.

When you buy and then sell, you pay the fee twice, so the price has to rise before you break even. At a 0.1% fee with GST the price must rise 0.24%, and at a 0.5% fee it must rise 1.19%. Tax on any profit comes on top, so use the Crypto Break-Even Calculator for the price that covers fees and tax.
