How it is calculated

Each trade is worked out on its own, then the trades are added up.

  • Coins in a trade = trade size ÷ entry price
  • Net result of a trade = coins × (exit price − entry price), the other way round for a short, minus the fee on each side
  • Total net profit or loss = the net results of all the trades added up
  • Win rate = trades with a net profit ÷ all trades
  • Average win and loss = what the winning trades made ÷ their number, and the same for the losing trades
  • Profit factor = what the winning trades made ÷ what the losing trades lost

Frequently asked questions

Short answers on adding up trades, win rate and profit factor.

It adds up several trades. Enter each one, long or short, with the amount you traded and the entry and exit prices, and a fee for each side. You get the total profit or loss after fees, the win rate, the average win and loss, the best and worst trades, the profit factor and the result of each trade.

Each trade is worked out on its own: the coins it held times the move in price, less a fee on the way in and on the way out. The results are then added up. Take three trades with a 0.1% fee each side: a long of ₹1,00,000 in Bitcoin from ₹25,00,000 to ₹26,00,000 makes ₹3,796; a short of ₹50,000 in Ethereum from ₹1,60,000 that is closed at ₹1,68,000 loses ₹2,602.50; and a long of ₹20,000 in a coin from ₹10 to ₹12 makes ₹3,956. Together they make ₹5,149.50 after ₹350.50 of fees, 3.03% of the ₹1,70,000 traded.

It is the share of trades that made money after fees. Two winning trades out of three is a win rate of 66.67%. On its own it says little: a high win rate can still lose money if the losing trades are much bigger than the winning ones, so look at it next to the average win and the average loss.

It is what the winning trades made divided by what the losing trades lost. Above 1, the trades made money overall; below 1, they lost it. In the example above the winners made ₹7,752 and the loser lost ₹2,602.50, a profit factor of 2.98.

Each profitable sale is taxed at a flat 30%, or 31.2% with cess, and a loss on one trade cannot be set off against a profit on another. So the tax is worked out on the winning trades, not on the total shown here. Fees cannot be deducted either, and 1% TDS is deducted from each sale value. Use the India Crypto Tax Calculator for the tax on each sale.

The Crypto Trade Profit Calculator looks at one trade in detail, with its break-even exit price and the result at other exit prices. This one adds up many trades, so you can see how a week or a month of trading went as a whole.
